Energy Work: What Happens When Touch and Intention Meet the Body
Some healing does not look like medicine at all. No pills, no needles, sometimes not even movement. Just a trained hand, a specific point on the body, and a method that has been quietly building evidence for decades, even while most people have never heard of it.
Energy work covers a wide family of practices, Reiki, biofield therapy, and hands-on methods built around the idea that the body holds information, tension, and blocked energy that can be released or redirected through touch, intention, or precise physical technique.
B.E.S.T., N.E.T., and Tapping
Three of the more studied approaches in this space are worth knowing by name.
B.E.S.T. (Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique) was developed by a chiropractor and works by locating imbalances in the body’s energy through specific muscle testing, then using light touch at precise points to help the nervous system reset itself. Practitioners describe it as syncing the body’s own energy back into balance rather than forcing anything from the outside.
N.E.T. (Neuro Emotional Technique) is built on the idea that unresolved emotional experiences can get physically stored in the body and show up later as pain, tension, or repeated patterns that will not go away no matter how many times they are treated conventionally. A practitioner uses muscle testing to find where that stored stress lives, then works to help the nervous system release it.
EFT, commonly called Tapping, is the one with the most peer reviewed research behind it, and the evidence is genuinely worth knowing about. In a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, one of the oldest peer reviewed psychology journals in the country, 83 people were randomly split into a tapping group, a talk therapy group, and a rest group. After a single hour long session, the tapping group’s cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, dropped by 24 percent, nearly double the decline seen in the other two groups. A later replication by Dr. Peta Stapleton found an even bigger drop, 43 percent, in a single hour. Anxiety and depression scores dropped alongside it. This is not folklore. It is measured blood chemistry, published and replicated.
What Basic Tapping Looks Like
You do not need training to try a simple version. Tapping uses your fingertips to gently tap a sequence of specific points, usually the side of the hand, the eyebrow, the side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, the chin, the collarbone, and under the arm, while speaking a short phrase out loud about whatever is bothering you. The combination of physical tapping and naming the problem directly is believed to calm the amygdala, the brain’s alarm system, while you are still thinking about the stressful thing, instead of avoiding it.
Famous Examples
Tapping has been used with military veterans dealing with PTSD, with disaster survivors, and in group settings with hundreds of high school students dealing with test anxiety, where the treated group scored significantly better than students who only used standard relaxation techniques. Actress and wellness advocate Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken publicly about using EFT. Golf legend and mental performance coaches have also used tapping-based methods with elite athletes to manage performance anxiety before high pressure competition.
Why This Deserves Real Attention
Energy work sits in an odd spot. Some of it, like tapping, has real published research most people have simply never come across. Other parts, like the deeper claims behind Reiki and biofield energy, are still mostly measured through reported outcomes rather than lab biomarkers, not because the effects are not real to the people experiencing them, but because it is expensive and difficult to study energy that cannot yet be measured with standard equipment. That gap between lived experience and laboratory proof does not mean nothing is happening. It means the tools to measure it are still catching up.
